This three week intensive (held online via Zoom) is designed to keep you sharp during episodic season. Together, we’ll work specifically on material from film and television projects. Over the course of these three weeks, we’ll explore all types of scenes—comedy, drama, procedural, sci-fi—with lots of individual attention, feedback and adjustments. Each class will include plenty of time for Q&A, tons of helpful tips on how to approach audition sides, breaking down a scene, what it means to make clear, specific choices and so much more!
In this week's class we will discuss the fundamentals of the casting process. Each student will leave with a solid understanding of how a character goes from script to screen and all the steps in between. We'll look at breakdowns, cutting sides, reviewing submissions, reading actors, presenting choices, seeking approval and getting an actor hired and on set. We'll also look at the basic fundamentals of script analysis and how to quickly and effectively get to the heart of your next set of sides.
FORMAT: presentation, interactive workshop, Q&A
Self-taping is not going away anytime soon, and perfecting your technique is a must. This week, each actor will receive short, co-star sized scenes to be self-taped and submitted prior to class. During our session, we'll watch and discuss each tape with specific feedback and notes on both performance & technical quality. We'll focus on the art of the co-star audition. How to not "do too much" but keep the moment alive and truthful. We'll also discuss self-tape studio set-ups (without getting too nerdy).
FORMAT: actors pre-tape scenes, interactive workshop, Q&A
Here’s where we’ll put everything we’ve learned into practice. For our final week, I will hand-pick and assign 3-5 page scenes a few days in advance. Each actor will receive the breakdown, along with the sides, so they can do their script analysis and prep at home, and then perform live for the group with a reader.
We'll focus specifically on navigating the "live" virtual casting process, and each actor will receive specific notes, feedback and adjustments. Performances will be taped, and recordings made available to each student following class.
